The ‘Art’ of Adding a ‘Pop’ to Your Interiors

Pop art became popular in the 50s as a reaction to traditional art.

It uses imagery from popular culture such as advertising, news, comic books and mundane objects, and then isolates and removes the object from its context, or combines it with unrelated material to make a statement.

Pop art can be a great way to add a modern touch to your own space. If you have brick walls in a room, pop art will stand out beautifully against the traditional medium. Look for pieces with bright colors, like Andy Warhol’s Campbell or Marilyn Monroe.

If you’re trying to find the right furniture for your space and it has dark walls and floors, a pop of color with a piece of bright furniture is another way to bring a pop art feel to your space. For example, brightly colored couch accented with bright pillows and a smaller complimentary piece of artwork will brighten up your space.

Speaking of a “pop of color,” in a space with many neutral tones, one way to spice up your room is to choose a singular bright color and add touches of it throughout the room. Think throw pillows, vases, blankets and artwork, spreading the color throughout the room.

If your room is decidedly modern, with glass and metals commanding much of the attention, with crisp lines and strong neutrals leading the way, pop art will compliment this style (while adding color and interest). Try focusing on a single color with which to lead, and then choose artwork and accents that will set your room apart.

Another way to showcase pop art in a room is to choose one wall and paint it with a striking color that works with the artwork you intend to hang. This will provide you with the perfect backdrop with which to showcase your pieces. Then, hang them sporadically to add visual interest to your room.

The key to pop art is not what will match, because the most interesting and successful designs often incorporate pieces that you wouldn’t imagine go hand in hand. Instead, the stark differences are the key to their coordination.
